Course Overview:

In this Introductory Course, we will introduce you to some of the core concepts behind the Communication Mindfulness project. This will include the idea of communication mindfulness itself, as well as the key concepts of digital literacy and global digital citizenship. We will then learn more about online safety through the lenses of technology, language and psychology, as well as gain an understanding of why this holistic approach to online safety is so important for individuals and their communities.

The following provides an outline of the modules that are covered in this course:

  • Module 1: An Introduction to Communication Mindfulness

  • Module 2: Online Safety through the Lens of Technology

  • Module 3: Online Safety through the Lens of Language

  • Module 4: Online Safety through the Lens of Psychology

  • Module 5: Applying the Communication Mindfulness Approach

Each module contains a series of articles designed to guide you through the main topics listed above. For each article, there is also an accompanying infographic which summarises the key points that have been covered.

Course Learning Objectives:

In this course, we will aim to:

  1. Define the key concepts of communication mindfulness, digital literacy and global digital citizenship;

  2. Develop a holistic approach to online safety through the lenses of technology, language and psychology;

  3. Recall basic best practices for improving online safety;

  4. Identify the most common types of online scams;

  5. Design a method for analysing the language of online communication;

  6. Demonstrate how language analysis can help us identify and interpret online scams;

  7. Discuss the basic psychological factors that influence how we communicate online;

  8. Explain three of the key psychological principles used by online scams;

  9. Recognise the importance of a holistic approach to online safety for individuals, businesses and communities; and

  10. Create a checklist to help digital citizens take an active, mindful approach to their online safety.
